After last week’s announcement of the approval of Brazilian bone-in beef in the Philippine market, it was now Indonesia’s turn. The country, also located in Southeast Asia (one of the regions with the greatest growth potential in animal protein consumption), authorized the export of bone-in beef, offal, and other prepared meat products, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) announced on Tuesday.
Indonesia is a major market in Southeast Asia, but with strong protection for its meatpacking industry, which results in much of its imports being concentrated on live cattle arriving from northern Australia, just a few kilometers away.
Indonesia has a population of about 280 million people and a GDP per capita of US$ 4,330.
Its beef consumption is about 830 thousand tons annually, of which 400 thousand tons are imported.
Per capita animal protein consumption is 60 kilos, of which about three quarters are seafood. Beef accounts for only 5% of the total.
